Any human, I believe from a teenager to a well grown person, who feels, can relate to ‘the funk’. It’s not necessarily a bad mood, it certainly isn’t the best mood…it just is. It’s like a little something, slightly bothering you and gnawing at you, and you’re lost for reasons as to why or how and what to do to escape it.
Lately I’ve been feeling less-than inspired, and yesterday I had one of my first funks in quite some time. Happily, I’m out of it, though I must admit the gloomy gray cloud that had descended upon Buenos Aires this morning is not helping things. Down in the Southern Hemisphere Summer has now fully turned; Autumn leaves continue to fall, awaiting their after-life through the aggressive sweep of city workers’ gargantuan brooms. The trees that flank my street were brimming with life just two months ago, and now they look like gnarly and pathetic creatures. Fall is here to stay, I suppose.
As much as ‘the funk’ is a normal occurrence in life (and perhaps a bit more normal in expat life), the ‘despedida’ is almost even more so here in Baires, and I imagine in other awesome cities where there is a high concentration of expat life. On Monday, one of my close friends here (also an Emory alum) returned to the States. It was time – she had spent almost two years here – but alas, it’s definitely bitter sweet. I’m not a big fan of good bye’s, but it is clearly a characteristic of life here. People come and go – they study here for a few weeks or a semester, they come to ‘pasear’, they live here for a while, but eventually, the majority of them leave. On the up-side, you meet a staggering amount of awesome people…on the flip-side, sometimes you’re counting your days with those awesome people. However the optimist in me has faith that, for those who you are meant to cross with at future points in your life, you will.
The before mentioned lack of inspiration has been paired with a very busy schedule and lots of new adventures, so I’ll definitely try to post a bit more in the coming days. My rehearsals have been getting super interesting, and even more so since I’ve been getting to know my cast much better (and the majority of them are characters even off the stage), so keep your eyes open for that too.
And with that I’m off for the day…hasta la proxima!
